About You About You

Mainly an acoustic guitar player.  Started playing just a few years ago and really could have never imagined that I would be on stage every week playing on the worship team.  I work closely with the worship leader arranging a good portion of the songs she chooses to put in.  I’ve picked up a bit of bass guitar some mando and some uke along the way.

When I first started playing I focused quite a bit on fingerstyle and still gravitate towards songs that lean that direction.  Since, I have learned to become a proficient rhythm player as well (thank you metronome…).  Focusing on these two areas of playing has definitely helped me fit into the team.

Our team is blessed with an incredible amount of talent for a smaller church.  I feel blessed and honored that God put me in a position to praise Him with music and to play with those folks every week.

Influences Influences

So many!

The person who really got me to pick up the guitar (at the young age of 38) was my wife.  I just wanted to be able to play for her so she could sing.

As far as musicians – the first time I heard ‘Divine Romance’ I loved it!  A few months after I picked up the guitar I tried to learn it.  Took a while but eventually I got it!  Have played it many times since and it’s still fun to play!

Another influence is Jack Johnson – he made it clear that I need to learn barre chords – so I did!

As with most acoustic players Tommy Emmanuel is a huge influence (as well as a discouragement – I’ll never be close to that good…).

My pastor is a major influence.  I started attending the church many years before I picked up a guitar.   He encouraged me (and all the church) to serve and it stuck.  Fourteen years ago I started running sound, six years ago I started playing guitar, and four years ago I played my first song on stage with my wife singing at Christmas time.  I’ve been on the worship team ever since (still running sound (thank goodness for wireless), though recently a number of folks have expressed interest in helping out at the mixer!).

There are many more – but you’re all bored by now – I’ll spare you!

Equipment List Equipment List

I’ll just list the acoustic setup I use as it’s what I use 95%+ of the time (every so often I play mando or uke or bass – it’s rare though…):

Guitar: Ayers small jumbo custom (really sweet guitar – solid Spruce over solid Mahogany, cutaway, beautiful custom inlays; really top of the line guitar that I picked up for a ridiculous price)

Pickup: Baggs M80 (it’s expensive but a great pickup)

Wireless: Audio Technica System 10

Effects: Zoom A3 (the learning curve is a bit steep, as well as the setup time – I found it worth it – really like this pedal)

Volume pedal: Can’t remember!  I use this to run pads through the Zoom.  Was a cheap one I found on Amazon and it does the job!
